Supermarkets and government services expected to prioritise local food under Food Security Plan

Tynwald has approved an amended motion requiring government departments to support increased use and promotion of Manx produce through the Isle of Man Food Security Plan, rather than through potential legislation as originally proposed.

Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh had sought to ensure supermarkets operating on the Island procure, supply and promote Manx goods - including seasonal items - and that government services prioritise locally produced food.

His motion followed a petition organised by the Manx National Farmers’ Union, which drew 1,800 signatures.

He described a statistic - that only six percent of food consumed on the Isle of Man is produced locally - as “sobering”, and says the Isle of Man is far too reliant on imported goods:

However, Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Clare Barber secured a series of amendments.

These shifted responsibility to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture and the Department for Enterprise to deliver the aims via the existing Food Security Plan, removed explicit reference to UK supermarkets, and changed the requirement for government services to source local food “where possible” rather than universally.

Minister Barber says a significant amount of work has gone into supporting Manx producers:

Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse says the farming community is one of the Island's greatest assets:

Douglas Central MHK Ann Corlett says the government must lead the way instead of "do as we say, not as we do":

Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Tim Glover says Tynwald must issue a "rallying call" supporting Manx produce:

Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston is a former farmer, and former president of the MNFU:

Education, Sport and Culture Minister Daphne Caine says the proportion of local produce used in primary school meals has increased from six percent to 25 percent:

MLC Gary Clueit says he welcomes the steps being taken by the government to enhance support for local producers:

Onchan MHK Julie Edge says it's encouraging to see Tesco stocking Manx meat, but acknowledges a caveat:

A further clause adds that Tynwald will receive an annual update on the progress and outcomes of the Food Security Plan.

The amended motion was passed in its entirety.
